What is nu: stone paper? Paper made from stone.
We all know that paper is made from wood, but did you know that paper can be made from stone too? Stone paper is a new, innovative material that has lots of benefits over traditional paper made from pulp. Our short guide outlines what stone paper is, how it is made, and a few of its benefits. Read on to find out more.
What Is Stone Paper?
There are a variety of different mixtures required to make stone paper. However, one of the most common ways is detailed in this blog. Most Stone paper is paper made from crushed chalk rather than wood pulp. This Stone paper is completely tree free. Instead of wood pulp, the paper is made from calcium carbonate, which is one of the most common natural substances on the planet. The calcium carbonate used to make stone paper comes from recycled rock and waste stone, such as limestone. This stone is produced as a by-product of the mining and construction industries.
How is Stone Paper Made?
In one of the ways to make paper from stone, calcium carbonate (80%) is crushed into a powder and mixed with non-toxic, high-density polyethylene HDPE resin (20%). The resin acts as as a ‘binder’ to keep the calcium carbonate together in flat sheets. Once the two materials are bound together, small white pellets are created. These pellets are then squeezed into sheets that closely resemble traditional paper. Unlike traditional paper, stone paper is naturally eco-friendly. This is because it does not use any waste water, bleach or acid during its production process. Because of this, many consider stone paper as an environmentally friendly paper alternative.
Can Stone Paper be Recycled?
Although stone paper is made from 20% plastic, it is still recyclable. Because stone paper contains plastic, it can be recycled with ‘no.2’ plastics. HDPE is also used to make milk cartons, yoghurt pots, and more, and can be widely and easily recycled. HDPE is also photodegradable (biodegradable by sunlight) with 14-18 months of sunlight exposure.
